If you haven’t checked out Drum Channel do yourself a favor and visit their site. It has comprehensive interviews, performance footage and updates about everything drumming related.
On October 18th at 7:30PM EST/4:30PM PST, Drum Channel will be streaming the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert from the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. The concert will feature Neil Peart, Chad Smith, John Blackwell, Terry Bozzio, Tommy Igoe, Efrain Toro, Nick Rich plus special guests.
All of these amazing drummers will be paying tribute to Buddy Rich. However, they will also be performing tracks from their respective bands, with Neil Peart playing Rush’s “YYZ” and Chad Smith performing the Red Hot Chili Peppers hit “Dani California”.
It’s hard to believe that some of these drummers learned so much and got so far from learning on marching drums in their youth, particularly John Blackwell. These guys have years of high-profile touring under their belts too though. This is a drumming event you shouldn’t miss and its free!

Famed Beatles drummer and Ludwig Drum endorser Ringo Starr has publicly addressed his fans with a message: stop writing me!
In a video clip posted on Starr’s official website he says…
“This is a serious message to everybody watching, I want to tell you that after the 20th of October please do not send any fanmail to any address you have. If that is the date on the envelope, it’s gonna be tossed. I’m warning you with peace and love, I have too much to do. So no more fanmail. Thank you. No more objects to be signed. Nothing.”
The NME hypothesized that an abnormally large amount of fanmail being sent to Ringo Starr could be the result of a 1991 Simpsons episode he was featured in. The episode in question is titled “Brush With Greatness” and in it Starr claims that he will answer every piece of fanmail he receives.

Apparently Weezer drummer Pat Wilson misspoke, or something else is a afoot. Pat Wilson told Billboard on the first day of Weezer’s current US tour that the band would be heading back to the studio with Jacknife Lee in November to record a follow up to the band’s “Red Album.”
Guitarist Brian Bell has just recently told Spinner.com that this isn’t exactly happening…
“Someone jumped the gun,” Bell notes, without directly implicating his bandmate. Bell suggests that the band’s current aim is to “focus on promoting The Red Album, and when we have the songs and the time feels right, we’ll record.” According to the guitarist, Weezer’s attitude toward non-Cuomo contributions of late has been a friendly one, and as such, productivity’s at an all time high. Even still, says Bell, “it would be kind of silly to put a timeline on a record that we felt wasn’t ready.”
When I first heard the news from Billboard about another Weezer album coming out so soon, I was skeptical. Last time the band had a successful record (The “Green Album”) and immediately followed it up (”Maladroit”), that record didn’t do so well.
It is exciting that all of the band members will be collaborating this time around. It seems some of the bands best early material was the result of collaborations. Drummer Pat Wilson was never really known for being a busy or even complicated player, but his early work with the band on his Yamaha drum kit was exactly what the songs needed. He is now a Ludwig drums endorser and can be seen playing Ludwig drums exclusively.
Weezer is currently in the midst of finishing up their current US arena tour with Angels & Airwaves as the opener.

A while back rumors of a Led Zeppelin reunion were squashed by Robert Plant, via a statement on his website indicating that he would not be participating.
However, a new rumor has surfaced recently, courtesy of former Twisted Sister front man Dee Snyder (of all people). Supposedly, the other original members of Led Zeppelin and Jason Bonham are considering reuniting with the singer of Creed off-shoot Alter Bridge as a sort-of bargaining chip.
Snyder told MuchMoreMusic: “They’re saying [to Robert], ‘We’re all rehearsed, we’re ready to go, here’s a gazillion dollars on the table. If you don’t do it, we’re going out with this kid. And he can sing the shit out of Zeppelin.’ And they’re gonna, like, hope that Robert, at the last minute, will go, ‘OK’, and step in…”
It is quite mysterious how Dee Snyder could know this kind of information, but it is interesting nonetheless.
Jason Bonham, (John Bonham’s son), has gotten many accolades for his drumming at Led Zeppelin’s 02 Arena Reunion show. Dave Grohl even stated in the press that Jason Bonham’s performance was “amazing.” His current kit is somewhat simlar to his father’s in that he plays larger size Ludwig drums.
My own drum kit is meant to be in the style of John Bonham and Dave Grohl, but its a combination of Pacific drums and Tama drums. I’d love to get a set of Ludwig’s similar to Bonham’s setup, as I’ve played them and they sound great.

The Guns N’ Roses “Chinese Democracy” album, which was 17 years in the making, will finally be released on November 23rd, a Sunday.
The album has been rumored, made fun of and talked about so much that it is hard to believe its actually coming out. The album is a Best Buy exclusive, so fans looking to purchase it will have to head there to pick up a copy. After what supposedly happened to an unsuspecting blogger who downloaded and leaked the tracks, you might want to forget about downloading it.
Drummers featured on the “Chinese Democracy” album include Josh Freese and Brain. I have no idea what kind of kits these guys played, or even how many other drummers could’ve been involved in the sessions. I did see pictures of a Pearl drum set accompanying an article about the recording of the album. Both Freese and Brain endorse DW Drums though.
Guns N’ Roses also has a few tracks from the album coming out in various other ways. Chinese Democracy track “Shaclker’s Revenge” will debut in the video game Rock Band 2, while “If The World” will be featured in the credits to “Body of Lies” the new Leonardo DiCaprio/Russell Crow film.

Last week when I posted about Neil Peart, I failed to mention the upcoming release of Rush’s new live DVD. The “Snakes & Arrows” DVD is set for release on November 25th. The whole package includes three discs, also available as a Blu-Ray, and features a lengthy live set by the band, filmed over two nights in October 2007 at the Netherlands’ Ahoy Rotterdam Arena during the tour for the “Snakes & Arrows” album.
Besides featuring a whole disc of bonus material the DVD has different camera angles and other goodies, most notably this…
“Cameras follow bassist and vocalist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson and drummer Neil Peart closely, capturing not only their playing note for note, but also the intimacy they share on stage.”
This is a great opportunity to get yet another chance to check out Neil Peart’s playing up close. Yes, of course his playing has been analyzed to death, but then again maybe not enough cause I haven’t seen anyone play the way he does yet.
Also, while I’ve seen a lot of footage of him playing live, I haven’t seen much footage of him since he has started to drum roland, with that huge V-Drum kit behind him.

Zildjian, which in Armenian translates to ‘son of a cymbal maker,’ is the largest cymbal manufacturing company worldwide. The company recently announced ‘The Zildjian Drummers Achievement Awards’ to celebrated their 385th year anniversary. The awards will take place on Sunday 7 December 2008 at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire.
The Zildjian event, which will honor individuals who have made “extraordinary contributions to the art of drum set playing and to music” will be acknowledging Ginger Baker, former drummer of Cream and Blind Faith. The drumming legend will be joined by former Tony Allen as well as Cream bandmate, Jack Bruce. Many more drummers and special guests will be announced in the coming weeks.
Aside from Cream, Ginger Baker has worked with many notable artists, including Paul McCartney and Wings for Band On The Run and Hawkwind’s 1984 release This Is Hawkwind, Do Not Panic. Though I’m not a Wings fan, Band On The Run holds a special place in my heart and I wouldn’t be surprised if Baker’s drumming gave it some of the charm I am so drawn to. As for Hawkwind, the music speaks for itself (in it’s own language). I stumbled upon their live album Space Ritual after bringing home a 92-cent used Tom Petty record from Record Surplus in Los Angeles (best record store in the area). Within two seconds, I knew it was A) not Tom Petty and B) something I definitely needed to listen to regardless. So when I saw that Ginger Baker played with Hawkwind, it sort of felt like I had come full circle on discovering a decent band from the past.
Congratulations to Ginger Baker for awesome drumming and a successful career.

Recently Brian “Head” Welch, formerly the guitarist of hugely successful metal band Korn spoke to Fox News (of all places) about leaving Korn and his latest album. The album is entitled “Save Me From Myself” and features none other than studio-great Josh Freese as well as bassist Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, David Bowie).
Blabbermouth.com has a link to the Fox News interview with Head. And while his album is already out and has debuted on the Billboard Top 200, I still haven’t heard it. Even though I was never into Korn, I’m interested to hear it just for Josh Freese’s drumming. I admit that he does a lot of projects, but I’m also wanting to hear the interplay between him and Tony Levin. Also, Josh Freese has long been a DW Drums endorser and I’ve never been disappointed by the drum sounds he manages to get, of course he does have access to some of the best drum tech’s, mics and gear in the world.
I will do my best to check out the album and post my thoughts here.

Oasis have announced a chunk of arena shows in major US cities for most of December. After a crazy fan attacked Noel Gallagher in Toronto, earlier this month, the band canceled a number of shows.
The tour also sports opener Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, who will play through the whole tour which starts in Oakland, CA on December 3rd and ends on December 20th in Fairfax, VA.
Although Oasis hasn’t really had too high of a profile in America since the mid 90’s, the band has remained huge in it’s native UK. A lot of news surrounding Noel Gallagher has brought them into the press more, and may even be helping to promote their new album. Also, while nothing complicated is ever played on their records drum-wise, Zak-Starkey (Ringo Starr’s son) can teach you a thing or two about playing for the song. He also has really nice custom DW Drums with a custom British flag paint job.
Oasis Tour Dates:
12/3, Oakland, CA (Oracle Arena)
12/4, Los Angeles, CA (Staples Center)
12/6, Las Vegas, NV (The Pearl)
12/8, Denver, CO (Broomfield Events Center)
12/10, Minneapolis, MN (Target Center)
12/12, Chicago, IL (Allstate Arena)
12/13, Detroit, MI (Palace of Auburn Hills)
12/15, London, Ontario (John LaBatt Centre)
12/17, New York, NY (Madison Square Garden)
12/19, Camden, NJ (Susquehanna Center)
12/20, Washington, DC (GMU Patriot Center)
