Ahead Drumsticks

Just this week I heard an interview on NPR with a guy who collected the broken sticks of famous drummers on eBay. He didn’t do well. No one would pay more than a couple bucks for them. I suppose Ringo Starr’s might bring in a little more cash, but no one seemed interested in the cast-aways some death metal bands former drum major. Nowadays I see that many vendors are selling “unbreakable” drumsticks. But as far as I can tell, none of them seem to “feel” right. These guys push a drumstick that at least seems to last longer. Les Ulrich says so, anyway. But maybe he gets free sticks to say that. Check ‘em out at Guitar Center.

Play Drums In The Dark!

FireStix Glow In The Dark Drum Sticks

This isn’t an amazing new piece of drum hardware or even a huge advancement in anything drum related, its just pretty cool (and yes, a little cheesy).

A company called Firestix has created “Light-Up Drumsticks” which are essentially, glow-in-the-dark drumsticks. Check out the page and the accompanying video demoing the product…Firestix Light-Up Drumsticks.

The sticks look really nice in complete darkness, but I can imagine them looking kind of lame at an actual club show. Anyway, cool nonetheless. I wonder about their playability and reliability though…

Weezer “Pork and Beans” Music Video

Pat Wilson of Weezer

In recent weeks, (previously?) much-loved rock band Weezer have been releasing numerous singles at a steady rate from their new untitled “Red Album.” So far, most of them have been panned by music sites and fans alike (see: any post about Weezer on Stereogum).

Now Weezer has released the video for the first single from their forthcoming Red Album, (release on 6/3), “Pork and Beans.” It features various internet/youtube stars such as Chris Crocker saying “leave Rivers alooooone!!”

Also, check out drummer Pat Wilson towards the end of the video, as his drum sticks have been replaced by light-sabers! Pretty funny stuff. While I think the song is just OK and the bands new album; weak, the video is really funny and well done. Check it out…

New Silverfox Drumstick Models

Drumsticks Picture

Grover Pro Percussion Inc. has introduced two new models to its SilverFox drumstick product line, the “Boston Basher” and the “Sweet Pea” at the MESSE trade show in Germany.

Boston Basher
“The olive-shaped wood tip and short tapered shoulder achieve maximum projection from snare drums of any construction and bring out a full-bodied tone from toms. At 16″ long with a diameter of .620″, this durable hickory stick effortlessly achieves heavy volumes on the club scene or in arena venues without feeling heavy in your hands.”

Sweet Pea
“The Sweet Pea also enjoyed a successful debut at the MESSE show in Frankfurt, Germany. At 15-3/4″ long with a diameter of 0565″, this dynamic hickory stick features a small ball tip for fast response on cymbals while producing a warm sound on snare. Created in response to jazz artists’ requests for a stick with the feel of a 5A, yet capable of consistent cymbal articulation and projection, the Sweet Pea is the ideal choice for combo jazz in every setting.”

I think for me personally, I’d really like to try out the “Boston Basher”. While it is a pretty lame name for drum sticks, it sounds like it would be great for heavier/more aggressive playing. Also the length of this stick seems like it would be beneficial for a player like myself who is usually all over my drum kit and not always playing in the pocket. Although, the length of the “Basher” sticks would also help with playing the pocket as well.
